If Covid 19 has you stir crazy, if you feel those pounds creeping on, or if you feel your mental health is starting to be affected – a daily walk will help.
Packed with benefits, walking can truly transform your life.
Here are just some of the ways walking will make you, and your life, so much better.
- Increase your endurance
- Strengthen your heart, lungs, and body
- Reduce your sugar cravings – walk when stressed instead of grabbing the chocolate and watch your pounds and problems melt away
- Improve your mood – by increasing endorphins
- Improve your brain function – this means forgetting less, learning more, increasing mindfulness, and reducing brain fog – yea!
- Protect your joints – and reduce joint pain
- Improve your bone density
- Help you lose weight – or maintain a healthy weight depending on your goals
- Manage various health conditions – such as heart disease or diabetes
- Balance your coordination
- Assist with you anger management – research shows that walking regularly re-wires your nervous system, so you experience decreased anger and hostility
- Improve your social life – walk with a family member (or friend / neighbor at a distance) to get social while getting fit
- Improve Your Connection with Your Inner Self and Help You Enjoy Much Needed You Time– this is a great opportunity to connect with you. By focusing on your breath, walking in meditation, even enjoying music you are getting some much need ‘you time’ and you are building your trust in self by keeping your word to you – how awesome is that!
Now that you know some of the benefits – it’s time to get started.
I learned that the best way to begin a new habit is to simply start!
Personally, every day or every other day, I commit to simply getting dressed and going outside…I let my feet take it from there.
I don’t commit to how long I will walk; I just commit to getting outside.
With COVID-19 it could be harder to leave your home; you could get in a rut of just staying in.
I push myself to get dressed and get out. Then, once I start walking something happens…I feel AMAZING! Literally, endorphins start buzzing and serotonin is flowing, I am on top of the world; and unless it’s below freezing and I can’t do a long walk, I usually end up walking much longer than I would have if I had negotiated beforehand with myself. Just get out there – and everything else will fall into place.
If you are still not sure about walking, I suggest you try it for a month or two. Go every other day if you can. Monitor the benefits, pay attention to how you feel, and see if you get as addicted to it as I have.
It’s okay if you are just beginning, start small and work your way up, that’s what I did and now I am much stronger than before and I am loving it.
